Barbuto Monovarietal olive oils
We came across the extensive range of monovarietal olive oils from Barbuto in Sicily when we visited an artisan fair at a beautiful historic fort on the Island of Malta in March. Barbuto was set up in 2009 and is based in Malta but the owners are Maltese and combine the best of both worlds in their desire to produce a range a very special extra virgin olive oils
The monovarietal extra virgin olive oils are produced in the Hyblean mountains of the Ragusa province in southern Sicily, where the olive groves are located on ancient terraces carved into the hillside. The Barbuto oils are made by cold pressing by mechanical means on the same day the hand picked to produce a special and unique range of monovarietal oils.
The varieties of extra virgin olive oils that are produced by Barbuto include the Tonda Iblea, Moresca, Nocellara and Verdese. We have tasted both the Tonda Iblea and Moresca and found both these olive oils to be excellent in quality and very typical of the olive oils from this region of Sicily.
We found the Tonda Iblea a very well balanced olive oil, it has a taste of tomatoes and possibly artichokes and we look forward to tasting the complete range when we next return to Malta or when visiting some of our Italian clients and producers in Sicily.
Barbuto also produce many other products, including craft beers, organic fruit and vegetables, cheeses and a large range of organic foods.
